Babue Gives Back

One Vision: Many Ways of Rebuilding the Village.

The Babue Village is our commitment to rebuilding the caregiving village.

The Babue Village

In Zimbabwe, when a baby is born, people often greet the family with:

“Makorokoto.”

Congratulations.

The traditional response is:

“Ndeedu Tese.”

This child is ours.

This expression is an invitation into belonging. It doesn't mean the child belongs to everyone. It means everyone belongs to the child. From the moment a child is born, everyone accepts a shared responsibility to help that child flourish. They are welcomed into the hearts, hands, and lives of a community that will celebrate, support, guide, and help raise them.

The congratulations are shared because the responsibility is shared.

Those words capture something beautiful: raising children has never been the responsibility of parents alone. Communities carried mothers, fathers, grandparents, neighbours, and one another. Everyone contributed according to their gifts. Every act of care strengthened the whole village.

That is the spirit that inspired Babue.

Babue was founded on the belief that when we carry children, we also carry families. When families are supported, communities become stronger.

The Babue Village brings that philosophy to life through a growing family of initiatives. Just as every person in a village has a different role to play, each initiative contributes in its own way to supporting children and the people who care for them.

The Babue Village

Nhaka Initiative

Nhaka is the Shona word for heritage or inheritance.

At the Nhaka Initiative, we believe our greatest inheritance is not something we own, but the way we care for one another.

Rooted in the spirit of Hunhu/Ubuntu, the Nhaka Initiative supports mothers, babies, orphaned children, and the families who care for them through pregnancy, birth, postpartum care, and the preservation of traditional caregiving knowledge. We work alongside communities to ensure that every child is surrounded by love, belonging, and the relationships they need to flourish.

Every Babue Baby Carrier purchased helps support this work.

When you choose a Babue carrier, you are helping provide practical support for families while preserving the cultural wisdom that has nurtured generations of children. Together, we are passing on an inheritance of care, one that reminds us that no child should grow up alone, because everyone belongs to the child.

Ubuntu Carried Child Project

The Ubuntu Carried Child Project, co-founded by Babue and Let's Talk Babywearing, exists to make evidence-informed family support more accessible. Together, we are developing educational resources that reconnect ancient caregiving wisdom with modern science while helping families access professional support such as babywearing consultations, infant sleep guidance, and lactation support.

Revenue from Ubuntu Carried Child Project educational resources is reinvested directly into this work, helping make these services more accessible for families who might otherwise be unable to afford them.

In many African communities, this guidance was traditionally shared freely during Kusungira, the postpartum season when experienced women surrounded new mothers with practical help, encouragement, and wisdom. Through this project, we hope to recreate that same spirit of community support in a modern context.

Babue Special Needs Foundation

As Babue grows, we will expand our work through the Babue Special Needs Foundation, supporting families raising children with disabilities and complex needs through education, adaptive equipment, therapeutic resources, and community connection.

Future products and programs developed specifically for this foundation will directly support its mission.

Although each initiative serves families in a different way, they all grow from the same roots.

A village is not defined by its size, but by its willingness to carry one another.

Whether you choose a Babue carrier or one of our educational resources, you become part of something much bigger than a purchase. You become part of a village that believes parents deserve support, wisdom is meant to be shared, and communities flourish when we carry one another.

When you carry your child, you help carry another family.

Because what we carry, carries us.
