Mbereko

Where Every Life Is Held

What does it mean to be held?

Come, mwanangu.

Before we continue our journey through the Village, let's spend a little time where every human journey begins. Together we'll explore the meaning of Mbereko, as a way of understanding what it means to be held, to belong, and to become fully human within relationships.

We'll journey from the womb to the Mbereko, from the Mbereko to the village, and from the village into Hunhu (Ubuntu), where those who are lovingly held gradually learn to become a place of safety, comfort, and belonging for others.

Because every path through the Babue Village begins here.

In Zimbabwe, Mbereko is often understood as the cloth used to carry a baby, yet it carries meanings that reach far beyond its physical form. Through proverbs and lived wisdom, it becomes a way of understanding how life itself is meant to be held with care, connection, and responsibility. Mbereko is not simply what carries a child but what it feels like to be held.

Not because everything is about a carrier. But because everything is about being held.

To be held safely.

To be held lovingly.

To be held in a relationship.

To know that someone is there.

Every human journey begins in a place of holding.

The womb holds us.

When we are born, the Mbereko continues that holding.

As we grow, the village expands that holding.

And through Hunhu (Ubuntu): the understanding that we become fully human through the way we care for and belong to one another, we gradually learn to become that holding for others.

Perhaps this is one of the deepest gifts of Mbereko as it reminds us that being carried is never only about transportation. It is also about relationship, belonging, and about discovering, from the very beginning of life, that we do not exist alone.

Within the Babue Village, Mbereko becomes more than a tradition. It becomes a way of seeing.

The stories hold us.

The songs hold us.

The grandmothers (Gogo) hold us.

The community holds us.

Caregivers are held so they can hold their children.

Every path through the Village quietly returns here.

Not because Mbereko is another place within the Village, but because it is really the pattern that gives life to every place. Mbereko is where we first learn what it feels like to be human.

The womb holds us. The Mbereko continues that holding. The village expands that holding. Hunhu invites us to become that holding for others. This is the journey of the Babue Village. Where we discover how generations of people have carried one another.

Welcome to Mbereko. Welcome to where every life begins.
